Background

Daniel Tigard earned his BA in philosophy at the University of Washington–Seattle, MA at Brandeis University, and PhD at Tulane University. His work addresses topics in ethical theory, such as moral conflicts, moral agency and responsibility, with applications to issues in bioethics. His doctoral dissertation, written under the direction of Professor David Shoemaker, utilized theories of moral psychology and responsibility to analyze the nature and value of moral distress in medical practice. More recently, he has applied theories of moral agency and responsibility to ethical issues in emerging technology.

In May 2020, he began work at the Technical University of Munich, as a Senior Research Associate in the Institute for History and Ethics of Medicine. Before coming to TUM, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Human-Technology Center at RWTH Aachen University, where he focused on ethical issues in medical technology and human-computer interaction. Together with members of the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence and the Munich Center for Technology and Society, Dr. Tigard was stationed on the project “Responsible Robotics: Tracing Ethical and Social Aspects of AI-Based Transformations in Healthcare Work and Knowledge Environments.”

Dr Tigard is now Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of San Diego.
